This landscape, which cannot be easily located, must on stylistic grounds date from the 1870s. The treatment of the light betrays the southern inspiration that Harpignies had experienced during his travels to Italian and his acquaintance with Corot’s Italian landscapes.
Unjustly, Harpignies is often considered little more than a disciple of Corot. It is true that Corot’s influence can be regularly shown, but as a water colourist in particular, Harpignies was a virtuoso with a clearly recognisable style.
Human figures play a subordinate role in Harpignies’ oeuvre. A short period in the 1850s, in which children playing are emphatically present in his landscapes, is an exception to this.
