This painting probably depicts Permeke's wife and their son Johnnie. With its large, simple forms and earth colours, this work is typical of Permeke's 'peasant' style. Nonetheless, the work has great intimacy. He has touchingly depicted the strong bond between mother and child. Permeke was seriously wounded during the war and was evacuated to England.
