Thomas Rentmeister
The German artist Thomas Rentmeister (Reken 1964) uses everyday objects as the building blocks for his works, while stylistically referring to Minimalism. He often uses unconventional materials such as sugar, refrigerators or paper tissues, but as a sculptor he has a keen eye for volume, mass and space.
Rentmeister is known for, among other things, the ‘blobs’ shown here: large plastic objects with a glistening, monochrome surface. The sculptures’ abstract forms make them difficult to define but their lustrous polish makes them irresistibly attractive. Because they are intended to be placed directly on the floor without a plinth, they enter into a direct relationship with the surrounding space. The environment is also reflected in the surface and so becomes part of the work itself: the internal and external are fused. The blurring of the distinction between interior and exterior space also plays a clear role in his sculpture ‘Dome’.
