At first glance, a rather odd one out in our museum library is a trilingual chess book with the cryptic title: ‘Opposition et les cases conjuguées = Opposition und Schwesterfelder = Opposition and sister squares’.
One look at its creators makes it clear why it belongs in our museum library collection. The book was designed by the artist (and chess player) Marcel Duchamp, and devised by him together with chess master Vitaly Halberstadt. The content of the book is almost as cryptic as its title. It discusses so-called endgame variations that almost never occur in practice. This is probably why Duchamp himself once said that, apart from himself, only 3 or 4 people in the world would be interested in it. All the more remarkable, then, that a publisher was willing to invest time and money in it.
