More information

A young woman lies on the ground in a childish orange sweater and a check skirt. Dreamily and with red cheeks, she stares at the sky. The association with puppy love from an American teenager film is quickly made, but the real story is left to the imagination. The photo is not a part of a larger story, but captures an isolated moment and thus stands alone.
The girl in the photograph is Cindy Sherman, the photographer herself. In other photographs she appeared as a worried housewife, as a tense old woman or as a lady of nobility. Each time, the same face returns in a new setting, which conjures up strong associations with the worlds we know so well from television and advertising. By playing differing roles, Sherman investigates how much we are increasingly identifying with the female role patterns that are designed by the media and commerce.
