Haarlem artist Leendert van der Cooghen is best known for his drawings and prints. Between 1664 and 1666, Van der Cooghen made a series of figure studies of a young man on blue paper. They were all made after the same male model. These studies are mainly designs for his etchings dating from the same period. This particular drawing was also made after this model, but there is no corresponding print on this occasion. The drawing possibly originated as an end in itself.
