From the sixteenth century onwards, many of the country estates in the dunes of Holland had what was known as a finchery, where small birds were trapped during migration with the aid of drag-nets and clap-nets. To the left the company of bird catchers hides by the finchery shed. Two strings of dead birds hang on the side of the shed. The Church of St Bavo in Haarlem can be seen on the horizon.
