Entry catalogue Italian Drawings 1400-1600

Author: Klazina Botke

Koenigs bought this charming little work as an Italian drawing made around 1450 in Verona. Both figures are wearing a pellanda, a voluminous cloak with long spreading sleeves and high collar which came into fashion as early as 1380 and was worn until the middle of the fifteenth century.[1] The woman’s hat, a spherical cap with an extension at the back, looks very much like a piece of headgear that was popular north of the Alps at the beginning of the sixteenth century,[2] so it is also possible that the drawing was made there.
