Dear Sir or Madam,
I work at the University of Tübingen and I'm looking for a cover of a collected volume that is going to be published worldwide.
This painting by Kandinsky would fit perfectly. I found a picture of it online on wikiarts which says that it is license free and open for (commercial) use to everbody. Can you confirm this information? Is it true that the painting is in 'public domain'? And can I use it as a cover illustration for a scientific book?

Dear Lukas, unfortunately I am not an expert in copyright, but the general rule is 75 years after the artist's death. Kandinsky died in 1944, so the information is probably correct. This work from 1930 could be described as like a fairy tale. At the centre is a fish like ship bathed in sunlight with several dancing figures, a bird fying top right and a city in the distance. It is a capricious fantasy. The title 'Launisch' (capricious) can be explained in relation to the scene as whimsical and eccentric.
