  • Rebecca devaney asked

I have a framed naked Maja by Francisco Goya made of tiny seeds of different types, size, and color. It was given to me from a friend who's parents were antique dealers, ian not find anything like it anywhere on the web can you help me learn more about her and the value of it? I would like to add photo if I had an address to send I to.
    Thank you,

  • Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen answered

Dear Rebecca, Thank you for your question. The object that you possess must be special and beautifully crafted. It might be interesting for (art)historians who research the reception history of a great work of art as it says something about the popularity of the original, and indicates that the nude image - originally meant for just one of a few pair of eyes - has been widespread. That it is made from seeds adds to its value as curiosity. In a museum we usually do not work with copies. The 'Dressed Maya' came in the collection via a private collector, D.G. Van Beuningen. We keep it because the copy is made during Goya's lifetime and thus underlines that his work was already valued highly at the time. If you want to know the market value of your piece, I would suggest to consult an antique dealer or an auction house. Kind regards, Els
