Lastman was a history painter whose main claim to fame is that he was Rembrandt’s teacher. But he was a very good storyteller himself, and had a colourful style all his own. A superb example is this Virgin appearing to St John the Evangelist. Lastman brought the sea-green and wine-red of the clothing back from Venice, but the man’s head and calves are pure Dutch.
