Mary Magdalene can be identified from her attribute, the jar of ointment. First and foremost, this picture recalls the Bible story in Luke 7:37-38. ‘And, behold, a woman in the city, which was a sinner, knew that Jesus sat at meat in the Pharisee's house. She brought an alabaster box of ointment and stood at his feet behind him weeping. Her tears made his feet wet, and she dried them with the hairs of her head. She kissed them again and again and anointed them with ointment.’ Tradition has identified this anonymous woman as Mary Magdalene who, after all, was a repented public woman and thus also known as a sinner.
The panel can be attributed with certainty to the German master Stefan Lochner; only twenty paintings are known to be by him. It initially formed the inside of a side panel of a small triptych. Probably the rear was also painted, but the panel has been sawn in two. Front and back were therefore separated from each other.
