Rotterdam Design Prize 2011

The international jury, consisting of Susan Szenasy, Sebastian Wrong and Lars Müller, has chosen vacant Nl, where architecture meets ideas, by Rietveld Landscape as the winner of the 2011 Rotterdam Design Prize (€15,000 euro award) They receive the price for the way Vacant NL makes the viewer think about a big problem facing the small country of the Netherlands.” With 30% of the votes, the Vlaamsch Broodhuys is the decisive winner of the Premsela Public Prize. As the audience favourite, the Vlaamsch Broodhuys will receive an award of €5,000.

The nominations for the Rotterdam Design Prize 2011 were more diverse than ever before. Fifteen finalists competed to be winner of the Rotterdam Design Prize 2011 and of the Premsela Public Prize. The nominated designs were exhibited in Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen in Rotterdam until 12 February. the next edition of the prize will be held in 2013.

Team

The team of scouts for the Rotterdam Design Prize 2011 had been selected by artistic director Joanna van der Zanden and comprised:

  • fashion designer/artist Aziz Bekkaoui
  • designer and critic Sophie Krier
  • industrial designer and professor at TU Delft Matthijs van Dijk
  • design duo public space Ginette Blom and Jacqueline Moors
  • graphic designer and head of the MA course at the Design Academy Eindhoven Joost Grootens, winner of the Rotterdam Design Prize 2009.

Stimulating the debate

Since its establishment in 1993, the Rotterdam Design Prize has provided an overview of important developments in Dutch design. This year the ‘king of Dutch design prizes’ is being organised for the eleventh time. The Rotterdam Design Prize stimulates debate about design in relation to cultural and social developments. Previous winners include big names such as Studio Dumbar, Hella Jongerius and Thonik. The nominated works will be exhibited at Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen. This year the candidates will be nominated by five scouts. There is a cash prize of 15,000 euros plus the Premsela Public Prize.
