Presentation by the Belgian artist Christophe Coppens opened on 9 March 2013.
Christophe Coppens (b. Belgium, 1969) worked as an accessories designer for 21 years, under his own label as well as for other designers. On 5 May 2012 he decided to close his business and discontinue all his activities in the realm of fashion. His most personal reason for doing this was the dilemma between fashion and art that he felt for many years.
"You can’t be a good artist with the mentality of a fashion designer,” Coppens explains. “And I didn’t succeed at being a part-time artist.”
- Christophe Coppens
His first work as a 'full-time artist' is Everything is Local, Landscape Part 1, a work commissioned by the Han Nefkens Fashion on the Edge initiative. Boijmans has the honour of presenting this work to the public for the very first time.
