Art Rocks 2016

The music competition Art Rocks is the biggest Dutch music competition in which music blends with visual arts. Out of the 200 artists and bands which competed by sending in their own creative songs, fifty have been selected for the semi-finals.

The semi-finals took place in five museums: Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen, Drents Museum, Tropenmuseum, Kröller-Müller Museum and Museum het Valkhof. The following artists performed by their favorite artworks on the 20th of November 2016 in Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen: Anne van Damme, DAMES, JEZEKIAH, Kazilae, Koude Kermis, McGyver, Mr Mondegreen, Rowin Grunder, Blind Surfer and Pyke. They competed for a place in the finals on 17 January 2017 at Paradiso in Amsterdam. Six music acts went to the finals, including one act which was determined by audience votes. Panel of judges

The judges of Art Rocks were Cata.Pirata (Art Rocks Ambassador), Waldo Vermeer (Never Mind the Hype and programmer of music venue De Gigant) and Fieke Dieleman (Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen). They chose the best acts for each museum, varying from rock to classic, from hiphop to house. Furthermore, online voting determined two extra semi-finalists for each museum.

Ambassadors Giovanca en Cata.Pirata

Singer Giovanca and Skip & Die vocalist Cata.Pirata have also come up with numbers inspired by Madonna (Roy Villevoye) and The Mandrill (Oskar Kokoschka). The ambassadors are also members of the panel of experts and part of the varied programme of extra events being organized in the museums  The  programme will include masterclasses in song-writing by Giovanca, and performances beside the works of art.

About Art Rocks

In 2012 Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen hosted the first successful Art Rocks competition, made possible by the BankGiro Lottery. Young and old alike visited the musical events and masterclasses by Giovanca ,Typhoon and others. Try Acrobatics were the first winners. The second Art Rocks event followed in 2014 and Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen also invited the Centraal Museum and Groninger Museum to take part. With an exciting finale during Eurosonic/Noorderslag, Bird in a Glasshouse took first prize. As in the previous competitions, the Grote Prijs van Nederland will partner Art Rocks in 2016.
