Rembrandt made this study of a man wearing a
flat cap and cloak, holding his left hand aloft, with his shadow depicted on
the ground, probably around 1632–1636. At that time, he produced many studies
in oak gall ink of beggars, musicians, and other street figures wearing
striking clothing and headgear.
