The engraver Marcantonio Raimondi worked closely with the great Renaissance painter Raphael. His prints ensured that Raphael’s compositions became famous throughout Europe. In the case of ‘The Judgment of Paris’ Raimondi has elaborated upon a drawing by Raphael, with restrained lines and subtle contrasts of light and shade. On the left we see Paris judging the goddess Venus more beautiful than Juno and Minerva.
