Entry catalogue Italian Drawings 1400-1600

Judging from the old inscription at the top border, this little drawing was once considered a portrait of Giovanni Battista Maganza (c.1513-1586), who must be the Vicentine artist Maganza the elder and not his artistic grandson and namesake.^[1] The old attribution to Jacopo Tintoretto (1518-1594), annotated in the collector Sagredo’s classification code - ‘I.T.’ standing for Iacopo Tintoretto - was decisively rejected by Tietze/Tietze-Conrat (1944) and much later replaced by a convincing one to his son Domenico, as an early work, by Byam Shaw (1967), who considers the drawing ‘excellent’ and ‘decidedly Tintorettesque’.

The only known portrait of Giovanni Battista Maganza senior is an anonymous Italian 17th-century engraving, inscribed with his Christian name and his alias Magagnò.^[2]In fact this is a posthumous portrait, probably derived from a lost painting, of a younger man, so the facial idiosyncrasies are far from accurate, the only resemblance being that he also wears a hat and has a beard, though trimmed. For lack of a better portrait of Maganza, an identification of the man in the Rotterdam drawing therefore remains uncertain.

Maganza senior was a distinguished portrait painter, as well as a poet, and father of the artist Alessandro Maganza, a prolific draftsman, well represented in the drawings collection of Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen. Tietze/Tietze-Conrat (1944) noted that it might be a portrait of G.B. Maganza junior, but Byam Shaw (1976) rightly pointed out that he died young, around forty years old, and the man in the drawing looks much older, in his seventies.

^[2] The print belongs to a series of portraits of famous Italian painters by the Monogrammist IP; a copy of this engraving is in Amsterdam, Rijksmuseum, inv. RP-P-1907-285. This print was reproduced in mirror image in the 1837 edition of Carlo Ridolfi’s Le maraviglie dell’arte […], heading the biography of Maganza senior (vol. 2, pp. 454-457).
