This is one of two preparatory drawings for the lithograph 'Le Sommeil'. The artist altered the position of the arms in the other drawing. The woman is probably a prostitute from a Parisian brothel. In 1896 Toulouse-Lautrec produced a portfolio of ten prints entitled 'Elles' showing the daily lives of such women: bathing, sleeping or waiting for clients.
