In dramatic contre jour lighting a giant bull is attacked by an aggressive, barking dog. A cowherd has picked up a stone to drive away the dog. The landscape painter Hendrik Voogd spent most of his active life in Rome, where he was a respected member of the international artists' circle there. His works were very popular both in Italy and in the Netherlands.
