This St Catherine of Alexandria is above all a beautiful, rather sentimental young woman - hardly the image of a saintly heroine. So were it not for a section of the wheel on which she was meant to be put to death and the palm frond borne by Christian martyrs there would be nothing to show that she died for her faith.
