This is one of several surviving fragments of a mural from a Florentine chapel of John the Baptist, the prophet who baptised Jesus and recognised him as the Son of God. An 18th-century reproduction tells us this woman was one of the onlookers at the Visitation - the meeting between the pregnant mothers of Christ and the Baptist.
