The engraver Marcantonio Raimondi worked closely with Raphael. His finely detailed prints ensured that the compositions by the great Renaissance painter became known throughout Europe. The composition of this print is based on one of the famous cartoons that Raphael painted for a set of tapestries on the lives of the apostles, intented for the Sistine Chapel in Rome.
