De Hooch excelled in depicting complex structured spaces with figures. The composition is built up of many horizontal and vertical elements, with the diagonal pattern of the tiled floor in the foreground. The woman going about her household duties is a frequently recurring theme for De Hooch. Care and housely virtue are perhaps the theme of these scenes.
