Entry catalogue Italian Drawings 1400-1600

Author: Albert Elen

This is a folio from a hypothetical lost drawing book, a remnant of which is now part of an eighteenth-century album called the Gozzoli Album, held in Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen. For a general description, see here.

This page was originally folio 45 recto in the hypothetical lost volume (now also a recto in the album). The finger smudges in the lower right corner confirm that this was originally a recto page.

Similar drawings of seated men (saints, possibly apostles), also from the workshop of Gozzoli (but by different hands) and arranged in a model book mise-en-pages, are found on the versos of sheets now in Windsor[1] and London,[2] the former with four figures two by two, the latter with two figures above and a (head of an) ox below.
