Adriaen van Wesel was born in 1417 in Utrecht and became a member of the local saddle-makers guild, to which sculptors were also admitted at that time. He became a successful sculptor, much in demand by important clients. He made altarpieces for both the Maria Church in Utrecht and the St. Jan in Den Bosch. It is exceptional that such facts are known of his life and work; it is often impossible to determine the maker of many works dating from the 15th century.
