From 1638, Willem Heda regularly painted still lifes in a vertical format. For an important part, and also in this painting, the vertical format was in fact achieved by giving more space above a horizontal composition and especially by showing the table cloth right to the edge of the bottom of the painting. This gives Heda the chance of placing his signature on the bottom of the table cloth, as if it were embroidered, rather than on the edge of a table or, for example, on a knife. This painting is one of the few remaining to have an original 17th-century frame.
