In the 1950s, abstract painting was so dominant it seemed like a new universal language, a kind of visual Esperanto. Nonetheless, in every country there were artists who continued to make realistic art in one form or another. In the Netherlands, Co Westerik created a highly personal oeuvre in which autobiographical elements are combined with references to age-old traditions of portraiture and figure painting.
