In her paintings Bridget Riley plays with the optical effects of movement and changes in colour brought about by the interaction of repetitive patterns. This so-called ‘Op art’ was very popular in the 1960s and 1970s and was increasingly appropriated by advertising. Disillusioned by this development, Riley stopped painting for some years.
