Dubuffet was both artist and businessman until 1942 when he decided to devote himself entirely to art. Since 1963 he has produced a series of works entitled 'L'Hourloupe'. They include paintings and also three-dimensional objects in polyester and foam plastic, which are constructed from bizarre shapes painted with heacy arabesquesin red, blue and black so that they resemble the interlocking pieces of a jigsaw puzzle. They are often recognizable as pieces of furniture, utensils or human figures.
