The person in this 1639 portrait is the 64-year-old widow Cornelia van Wesel of Dordrecht. Her husband had had himself painted by another artist, and after his death she must have felt that she deserved a companion piece to herself. The idea that anyone with money could commission their portrait was new at the time. It was about keeping one’s memory alive.
