This painting was commissioned in 1657 by the Marquis of Soncino in Milan, who frequently commissioned works from Guercino. It is thought to have remained in the possession of his family for a long time, after which it changed hands several times. In 1952, it was purchased for 300 guilders as an anonymous Italian work by a predecessor of the Hoogheemraadschap Hollands Noorderkwartier. It then hung unnoticed on the wall of an office of that institution in Hoorn for decades until it was rediscovered in 2015 as a Guercino, after which it was loaned by Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen.
