Few people appreciated Herman Kruyder's work while he was alive, although it was recognized that it had a character entirely its own. Kruyder lived in Haarlem, Heemstede, Bennebroek and Blaricum. This undated painting was created in the last phase of his life.
Kruyder was suffering from bouts of depression, and it seems that he had wanted to convey his mental state with the sombre palette of colours that he wielded for this self portrait.
