The biblical theme of the prodigal son (Luke 15:11-32) was often depicted in the 17th century, but seems to have been in particular demand in Rome in the period years 1645 - 1650. The brilliant engraver Pietro Testo, who worked together with Mola, published four moments from his parable in this period. One of these prints depicts the moment in when the son sees the errors of his ways, which is also show on this painting.
