The early 15th-century Hercules sturdily awaits his foe, and the similarly early satyr almost apologetically does service as a candle-holder. Sculptures like this later became far more refined. The infant Hercules slaying the snakes sent to kill him is a variation on a figure in the famous Hellenistic sculpture of Laocoön an his sons, while the adult Hercules subduing the Nemean lion is a miracle of expressive body language.
