  • Theo Giebels asked

I saw this double-picture today on an art exhibition in Düsseldorf, Germany. What is the function of this double sided picture in this small size ? Could you please give me hints about research texts. Danke vielmals, Liebe Grüße Theo Giebels

  • Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen answered

Dear Theo, it must have been part of something larger, probably a diptych with, on the other panel, the patron who ordered the painting. It's this small because it was meant for private devotion and when closed it could even be taken along on a trip. To start your research you could use the large exhibition catalogue on diptychs, the standard work at the moment: Prayers and Portraits; Unfolding the Netherlandish Diptych. It doesn't contain this specific painting but deals with similar works, and it contains further literature references if you want to study it further. All the best, Friso Lammertse
