More information

This panel, painted on both sides, was originally part of a tripych. The middle panel of this, with a scene showing the Annunciation of Mary, hangs in the Sainte Madeleine in Aix-en-Provence. The right panel, which is intact, is in the Royal Museum of Fine Arts in Brussels. This rear side of the left panel shows Mary Magdelene, while the panel in Brussels depicts Christ. The panels of the altar were generally kept closed. Both panels then formed together an illustration of the recognition of the resurrected Christ by Mary Magdalene, the scene from the Passion story in which Christ speaks the words: 'noli me tengere' (literally: 'do not touch me').
