For a short period the artist Janus de Winter was an example for young progressive artists in the Netherlands. He made semi-abstract paintings that were intended to represent moods, the realm of ideas or the timbre of a piece of music. Toorop also experimented with these possibilities. This 'Composition' possibly expresses her emotions about her husband Henk, whose depression often led him to drink.
