More information

The painting is a portrait of the wealthy Augsburg merchant banker Hans Höchstätter. He can be identified by the family coat of arms at top right and the initials H.H. at top left. The violet in his hand is a love symbol, just like the cord tied into loops that connects his initials: a so-called love knot. He probably had the panel painted as an engagement portrait.
