Jacob and Louise de Graaff-Bachiene donated this work to the museum to mark the opening of the new wing in 1935. The loosely composed still life is similar in structure to a still life that Ensor painted in 1880-1884, now in the collection of the Museum voor Schone Kunsten in Doornik. The colours in the painting shown here, however, are much lighter. In the period after 1900 Ensor frequently painted second versions of earlier works in a lighter palette.
