Schuhmacher loved to travel in the Mediterranean because of the light that gives everything sharp contours and shadows. Yet he seldom painted sunny pictures: his palette was dominated by muted colours and a wide range of grey tones. As a result, this harbour scene has an unnerving effect, as if it were painted by eclipse.
