Around 1650, it became fashionable in the Netherlands to fill whole walls of a room with landscape paintings. It is known that Adam Pijnacker also painted such wall coverings. Considering the dimensions of this 'Italianising landscape with lobster fishers', the depiction with its calculated decorative effect and the broad brush strokes must have been part of a wall covering, probably for an Amsterdam patrician house.
