  • Isam AL-kuhaili asked

    How mach pris this painting

  • Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen answered

Dear Isam, Thank you for your question. I am not sure what you want to know, probably what this painting would cost if it was for sale. First: it is not for sale because it is in a public museum's collection. Unfortunately I do not know the market value, but in case you are interested you can find auction results for similar artworks ar Artprice. These will give you an indication. Good luck and kind regards, Els

  • Grace asked

Why is there a nail in the wall in the background?

  • Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen answered

    Dear Grace,
The exact reason why this painting has a nail in the background is not clear. But the nail might be used for hanging a bundle of flowers or fruits. Such a nail can be found in other still life paintings as well.
    Best,
    Xin

More information

Jan Davidsz. de Heem can be considered the 'inventor' of the sumptuous still life: a relatively large still life, in which an array of mainly valuable objects and foods are laid out on display. The balance between light and shadow, colours and shades and between large and small shapes is consciously applied. In addition, complete attention is paid to each detail, without that being at the cost of the spaciousness., De Heem, who was active in Antwerp and Utrecht, is known as the inventor of the ‘sumptuous’ or ‘ornate’ still life in which precious silver and glass and delicious food are displayed on a truly grand scale. Affluence and abundance are the order of the day. All these delights are transient in the extreme, but here the viewer is barely reminded of it.
