Van Rijsselberghe was the most important Belgian exponent of Pointillism, a style in which the scene is made up of individual dabs of unmixed paint. Viewed from a distance these dabs fuse optically to create lively passages of colour. Toorop and Van Rijsselberghe
were both members of the Belgian artists' association Les XX (Les Vingt), which has a strong international profile around 1900 and was important in promoting the contemporary art.
