This is one of three surviving preliminary studies for the famous painting 'The Syndics' in the Rijksmuseum. It shows the figure second on the left in the painting, identified as the Amsterdam based cloth merchant Volckert Jansz. Rembrandt has rendered both the figure and his surroundings in bold, wide strokes of the reed pen and brush. He has not bothered about details, for this is a mere study, not a finished drawing intended for sale.
What was Volckert Jansz doing in the painting named 'Syndics of the drapers guild'?
Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen answered
He was one of the most wealthy and important cloth merchants in Amsterdam, and was one of the five directors of the Drapers' Guild. This painting was commissioned by the depicted for the hall of the Drapers’ Guild. Greetings, Sarie.
