What stands out in this drawing are the broad
pen lines around the body of the crucified Christ, particularly visible in the
arms, which modify earlier forms. It was previously thought that Rembrandt had
made these changes on the drawing of his pupil Van Renesse. Today, it is
believed that Van Renesse executed the drawing entirely himself, using the
adjustments primarily for emphasis. Rembrandt’s etchings of the same subject
from 1641 and 1653 likely served as a model.
