In this lightly watercoloured drawing of a Dutch river landscape,
Philips Koninck creates an impressive sense of depth. Like Rembrandt often did
in his vistas, Koninck chose an elevated viewpoint and a horizon set well below
the middle of the picture plane. The river’s surface is given a subtle
reflective effect through a thick layer of white opaque paint.
