In this drawing, an itinerant fortune-teller reads the hand of a young woman on the steps of a house. Next to the woman, a man whispers something in her ear. He is probably trying to persuade her to marry. Nicolaas Verkolje made several versions of this subject around 1693-1695.
The drawing is a preparatory study for the painting of the same name, which is now in a private collection. In it, the composition is reproduced in its entirety without modification. At a later date, Verkolje made another painting of the three figures, which is today in the Toledo Museum of Art (inv. no. 55.39). In it, they are seen closer and from a different angle. Also missing are the dog in front of the house and the child hiding behind the fortune-teller.
