Cranach made numerous paintings and prints of Venus, the goddess of love. He always accentuated her nakedness with jewellery, a hat or a veil. In this case her hand gesture is appropriate to the scene: Venus tells Cupid to resist shooting his arrows of love. The moral: that people should also learn to control their urges.
