More information

This sheet belongs to a group of studies of oriental heads by Schongauer. Although he visited Spain, which was dominated by the Moors until 1492, he probably did not make these studies after live models but from his imagination based on types from Netherlandish paintings of the time. Schongauer used some of these studies of heads in his engravings.
